Now that summer is in full swing, we all have an excuse to stuff ourselves with something frozen and delicious. As harried Mr Whippy van drivers everywhere will agree, when the sun comes out, we all scream for ice cream.
Like any proper tradition, there are some ice cream flavours that are absolutely essential. A menu without chocolate and vanilla is hardly a menu at all. But, though tradition is important, ice cream vendors aren’t without their own personal preferences. This has led a few to come up with some really wacky dairy-based experiments. From posh restaurants to soft serve sellers, here are seven of the world’s weirdest ice cream flavours.
1. Crocodile Egg
Though the flavour of this Filipino specialty may not be too different from its traditional counterpart, it’s unique central ingredient certainly earns it a special mention. The ice cream’s creator, Bianca Dizon claims locals have gone crazy for the crocodile egg based dessert as it is rumoured to be far lower in cholesterol than it’s chickeny cousin.
2. Smoked Salmon
Cold fish and frozen dairy doesn’t sound like the most appetising of ways to round off a meal, but that hasn’t stopped legendary ice cream makers Max and Mina of Queens, New York from making it happen. This bagel-inspired idea came from a particularly imaginative member of the public and definitely ranks as one of the pair’s more extraordinary creations - which is certainly saying something.
There aren’t many people who visit McDonald’s and wish there was a way to enjoy a Big Mac and a McFlurry all in one bite. However, catering to these unique tastes has become something of an ice cream parlour calling card. A blend of burger meat, French fries, cheese and mystery seasonings, courtesy of heledaria coromoto in Venezuala, this is one of the more baffling things you can put in your mouth.
If beef burger wasn’t bad enough, the Japanese have decided to take things one step further. Served in Tokyo’s Namja Amusement Park, home of several exotic flavours, raw horsemeat ice cream is certainly an acquired taste. Featuring chunks of blended, uncooked flesh and plain vanilla, this is almost as far removed from a Flake 99 as it’s possible to get.
5. Bacon and Egg
Made famous by Heston Blumenthal’s legendary fine dining institution, “The Fat Duck”, this now notorious menu item was one of the first attempts to freeze breakfast and serve it at the end of a Michelin starred meal. Despite the odd sensations and flavours, it doesn’t usually take long for guests to warm to the strange idea.
6. Breast Milk
Perhaps surprisingly, meat isn’t the most controversial ingredient to be added to everyone’s favourite dessert. When London-based vendors "The Icecreamists" announced that their newest flavour would be made with real human breast milk, public excitement quickly turned to horror. Produced with generous milk donations from anonymous donors, the flavour is nowhere near as exciting as the ingredients.
7. Whale blubber
It follows that the only countries with a well established ice cream tradition are those that can keep things frozen. It’s hardly surprising, therefore, that the Inuit are among the most expert at ancient ice cream making on earth. Known as Akutaq, this remarkable food is made with a mix of sweet berries, frozen flesh and whale or seal blubber.
Ice cream has now become synonymous with relaxation and indulgence. Though this is definitely still true in most cases, it’s worth remembering that not everything is as comforting as it may seem. Ice cream is still more than capable of keeping you on the edge of your seat.
