In America, chefs decided to cover sausages in a snuggly duvet of flakey pastry, making a tasty, if occasionally underwhelming pre-dinner treat. In Britain however, we go one step further. The promotion, run by “The Oast House” in Manchester, is part of the restaurant’s resolution to serve customers the best pigs in blankets in the entire city. This offer is seen by staff as the only way to truly guarantee that their snacks are up to scratch. The chosen candidate will be paid £500 for their service, and will even be able to bring a friend with them to assist with judging. As far as sausage contests go, this is about as serious as it gets.
Speaking to The Metro, The Oast House’s development chef, Mark, said that, “‘Pigs in blankets are the talk of the town this Christmas and are undoubtedly the trending food item of the season. That said, the pressure is on to ensure we’re serving up the best pigs in blankets and Christmas nibbles in the city. We’re wanting to play around with ingredients and flavours – and in order to pin down the perfect recipes, we need someone to come in and taste test to ensure our guests have the best Christmas nibbles possible! We’re looking for a festive foodie to visit The Oast House and give the team and I some honest feedback, face-to-face.” Clearly, nothing is being left to chance.
In order to potentially win what promises to be the most coveted prize in Manchester this year, entrants must submit an account of their “best Christmas story” by December 16th. According to the restaurant, “The applicant with the story that makes us laugh or cry the most will be given the chance to join us at the tasting session.” If ever there was an excuse to open the memory bank and revisit that awful embarrassing story about your drunk uncle being sick on the turkey, this is surely worth it. Any amount of public shame is worth £500 and unlimited sausages.
