Anyone au fait with high-concept sci-fi knows that McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce is a big deal. Delicious and irritatingly elusive, the dip is central to one of the most compelling character arcs ever put on the small screen. If it’s good enough to make the misanthropic Rick Sanchez give a sh*t about anything, you know it has got to be tasty.
As Mr Sanchez himself explained to his frazzled nephew, “I'm not driven by avenging my dead family, Morty! That was fake. I-I-I'm driven by finding that McNugget sauce… If it takes nine seasons, I want my McNugget dipping sauce, Szechuan sauce, Morty.” Fortunately for Rick, and unfortunately for the rest of us, it looks like the nine-series Szechaun storyline might have to be cancelled.
In an announcement that has both McDonald’s and Rick and Morty fans running to their nearest restaurant, it looks like the chain’s fabled dip is making a return. According to a cryptic post shared on McDonald’s New Zealand’s Facebook page, the “best sauce in the universe” is “coming soon”. Fasten your seatbelts.

The post itself features a signature Rick and Morty portal, in a nod to the titular character’s obsession with the sauce, as well as a hand holding a Szechuan-coated McNugget. Though there is no further information beyond that the sauce is returning soon, the apparent confirmation has already caused a stir.
As fans will be all too aware, this isn’t the first time that Szechuan sauce has made a comeback after its initial Mulan-related run. In 2017, McDonald’s released a very limited amount of the dip, causing some packets to appear on bidding sites for as much as $995 according to The Independent.
It is unclear from the most recent post whether the new release will be available worldwide or exclusively in New Zealand. Either way, news of a sauce drop is bound to be a sauce of excitement for anyone who enjoys their nuggets with something a little more exciting than ketchup. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that we don’t have to commute to Christchurch to get a taste.
