Unlike many big business, McDonald’s don’t muck around when it comes to competitions. If the excitement that surrounds the launch of the fast food franchise’s annual “Monopoly” promotion is anything to go by, it’s fair to say that Maccies has mastered the art of suckering people in with shiny prizes. At the end of the day, it’s a business model that seems to work.
That being said, this year’s Halloween peel-to-win sweepstakes might take top prize for seasonal gambling competitions. Between the 5th and 31st of October this year, McDonald’s customers in America can play the appropriately named “Trick.Treat. Win!” to be in with a chance of winning everything from free food to thousands of dollars in cash. If anything is worth that extra order of fries, this is surely it.
According to an official McDonald’s announcement, game players have around a one-in-four chance of scoring themselves some free food during the promotion. Items on offer include “Big Macs, Artisan Chicken or Buttermilk Crispy Chicken sandwiches, biscuit sandwich, small McCafé Frappé, smoothie, shake and snack-size McFlurry”, as reported by The Daily Meal.
However, once you go off menu is where your potential prizes become properly exciting. At the lower end of the scale, players can claim anything from Playstation store credits, to Best Buy gift cards, to Roku Streaming Sticks, to a year's supply of Dr Pepper.
As if this wasn’t enough to send you speeding straight to your nearest golden arch, each game piece also counts as token which is automatically entered into the daily sweepstakes on the McDonald’s mobile app. Each entry in this secondary competition puts you in with a chance of winning the really top-notch prizes, including a brand new Hyundai Santa Fe, free stays in luxury beach resorts and a grand cash prize of $50,000. Somebody’s in for a very happy meal indeed.
There are a couple of ways for punters to try their luck in the competition. The most obvious is to load up on the various items that offer game pieces. These include popular staples on the Maccies menu, including Quarter Pounders with cheese, Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, Buttermilk Crispy Tenders, 10- and 20-piece chicken nuggets, hash browns and McMuffin sandwiches, but also include a few select drinks.
If you don’t fancy a trip to McDonald’s, there other ways to enter the game. Competitors can get their hands on two game pieces, as long as they send a handwritten, stamped envelope with a return address to McDonald’s HQ. As much as we’re all for fast food competitions, taking the time to write to Maccies might be taking things a tad too far.
As nights get longer, summer sun turns into unrelenting drizzle and going outside seems like the last thing you want to be doing, it’s good to have something to tempt you out of bed. In many ways, the new competition is a win win for moody punters. Even if you don’t win yourself a new car, you should at least end up with something delicious.
