There are many places around the world where you can order a monstrous pizza. The appeal of a giant pie is so universal that restaurants of all shapes and size are constantly competing to outdo each other by serving up their own enormous in house specials.
The limitations of the modern pizza box together with the lack of weightlifters working in the delivery industry mean that transporting these colossal constructions has historically proved next to impossible. Getting hold of a novelty pizza in the comfort of your own home has, until now, been nothing more than a greedy pipe dream.
Fortunately, one Michigan restaurant is determined to usher in a new era of giant deliveries. To great fanfare from takeaway lovers everywhere, Mallie’s Sports Bar and Grill has introduced a brand new record breaking pizza that is pushing the boundaries of what we previously thought possible to transport.
With a base measuring 36 square feet and total weight of over 100 pounds, the stats behind this leviathan speak for themselves. Although Mallie’s creation is yet to be officially confirmed as a new world record, it seems certain to smash the current largest deliverable pizza title holder, which sits at a paltry 54 inches.
Clearly, building a monolith like this requires a very particular set of skills. So large is the pizza that only certain specific ingredients provide suitable construction materials. 50 pounds of pizza dough purchased from the nearby Caprara bakery spread and stretched by hand over a giant oven tray that receives a generous dusting of flour and cornmeal to prevent the dough from becoming sticky and soggy. The base is then topped with 35 pounds of rich marinara sauce, 15 pounds of mozzarella and a whole heap of pepperoni, before being slotted into the oven.
Undertaking a bake of this size demands some special gear as well as ingredients. In order to build an oven that’s up to the task of baking this behemoth, the staff at Mallie’s have had to think outside the box. Using an old shipping container fitted with a rudimentary shelf, the staff have managed to successfully build a giant homemade convection oven, which is capable of cooking the huge pizza in a little under two hours.
However, when thinking about the logistics of delivering such a beast, the bake is just the beginning. Transporting a six-foot by six-foot pie is not a simply a matter of strapping it to the back of a moped and hoping for the best. To tackle this problem, Mallie’s have pioneered a specially constructed giant box that slots comfortably on top of a truck bed. Though it still requires multiple personnel to lift, strapping it to the top of a truck at least ensures the pizza’s safe arrival.
This is not the first time that Mallie’s have left their mark on the giant food scene. The same oven that’s proved integral to the successful completion of this pizza project was originally created to help the business shatter a previous world record for an 1,800-pound hamburger.
Speaking to MLive.com, owner Steve Mallie proudly reeled off a list of some of the restaurants most outlandish achievements, including, “a two gallon ice cream sundae... two-pound tacos, five-pound burritos (and) a spicy food challenge.”
When it comes to oversized meals, Mallie’s are the experts.
Anyone living in the Southgate area of Michigan will be able to get their hands on the record-breaking pie, providing they have a large enough front door. However, an order cannot be made on the spur of the moment. The pizza will set you back a hefty $300 and Mallie’s have stated that they need at least 24h to assemble the ingredients needed for such a massive undertaking.
If you’re lucky enough to live within five miles of the restaurant, Mallie’s are willing to throw in the offer of free delivery as an extra incentive.
