The weather outside might be frightful, but that doesn’t make ice cream any less delicious. Even if you’re battling the freezing cold, it’s a fact of life that a cold scoop of something sweet can improve almost any situation, however bizarre the ingredients involved might be.
Having said that, there are occasions when maverick cooks take things a little too far. This year, one Hertfordshire-based business is apparently determined to push the people’s love of ice cream to the limit with one of the most outrageous flavours ever created.
Fabio’s Gelato, of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, has made a name for itself through the unique mixture of top-quality ice cream and experimental ingredients. Over the years, owner Fabio Vincenti has created desserts as unusual as “Marmite”, “Mince Pie” and “Bakewell Smash” ice cream, but it’s the eatery’s “Pigs in Blankets” gelato that is really stealing the headlines this year.
The strange sweet, which Vincenti has admitted divides opinion, is made with real meat pieces in order to impart a distinct taste, and is even served up inside its own Yorkshire pudding “bowl”. Complete with a crown of crispy bacon and a drizzle of maple syrup, it really is a dish that ticks every taste-box going.

Though the contentious ice cream has been thrown into the limelight this year, it isn’t actually the first time that Vincenti has featured it on his menu. The dish made its debut back in 2018, where it was the focus of a BBC special report. It just goes to show that putting sausages and bacon into ice cream is always going to make a splash.
Despite all the attention the dessert has been getting, there’s no word on how long it will remain a part of Fabio’s menu. According to a caption shared by the restaurant on Instagram, the flavour will be “Available while stocks last”. It all depends on how adventurous the people of Hitchin are feeling over the coming weeks.
