Some say you can have too much of a good thing. Even the tastiest ingredients on earth don’t belong in absolutely everything. Chocolate milk is, obviously, delicious. That doesn’t mean I want to use it as a dip for my pizza. There comes a time when you have to say enough is enough and exercise some restraint. Otherwise, things just get ridiculous.
This pearl of wisdom has been aptly reinforced by a restaurant in the Philippines that has taken unusual fast food combinations to slightly sickening new heights. Specialising in bubble tea, “The Pearl Fajardo” in the capital Manila, has expanded their repertoire, offering customers the option of French fries, topped with boba balls. The dish has been dubbed the “Triple Treat” by the restaurant. Sounds like they’re missing an “h” from that description.
Unsurprisingly, the sight of a perfectly good plate of French fries covered in what looks like carbonised frogspawn has caused consternation on the internet. As commenter Miki Cayaban summed up, “I like sago [pearls] and fries, but I don’t think they match together. Hahaha. What does that taste like[?]” Jauncho Licaros went further, adding, “Please don't tell me that they put the Ketchup on the Milktea.”
However, even though there are serious, justifiable qualms over flavour, the impact of the whacky combination can’t be understated. Since the pictures were first posted to Facebook on Thursday, they have been shared over 10,000 times, and been commented on by 4,500 people. As a publicity stunt, it’s certainly proven effective.
For anyone unfamiliar, bubble tea balls themselves are actually made from tapioca starch and are typically found at the bottom of sweet, chilled, frothy drinks. Whether or not this sounds like an appetising topping to a plate of French fries is entirely subjective. We’ll await wider consensus before passing judgement.
