Now that we're at the sharp end of the competition, the question of who left MasterChef last night is more important than ever.

With each passing episode, those left in the contest inch a little closer to the prize. No wonder nerves are getting a little shredded.

Unfortunately, just as those left in the contest get a little more excited, anyone exiting has to deal with ever-increasing disappointment. It's harsh, but this is MasterChef, after all.

Who left MasterChef last night?

As the competition enters the final stages, just five cooks remained standing. With the competition really hotting up, there is absolutely no margin for error.

Unfortunately for several of the cooks, this means missing out on the grand final itself.

Laura Laura was one of three contestants to make it through Grace Dent's quarter-final (Credit: BBC)

Scottish-born Laura was an incredibly consistent performer across the series.

Throughout, she demonstrated an exceptional grasp of both sweet and savoury cooking, exemplified by her quarter-final crumble.

Cooking for Grace Dent, Laura delivered "the smartest-looking crumble" Gregg Wallace had ever seen. The fact that it also delivered on flavour made her a no brainer for the semis.

However, she began to come unstuck during her stint in a professional kitchen, serving up raw scallops at Gamebird. Eventually, the pressure got to her, and she failed to cook her rack of lamb properly in the final four cook-off.

Still, after a pretty stellar competition, Laura can leave with her head held high.

Who is still in MasterChef?

As arguably one of the most consistent cooks in this year's MasterChef, Alexina has hardly put a foot wrong.

The businesswoman has impressed throughout, winning particular praise from former contestants Stephen Wallis and Dean Edwards.

She particularly excited Jay Rayner, who told her that her quarter-final dish was the sort of thing you might expect from a professional.

Drawing on his Italian roots, Mike has stood out for his classical, elegant style.

His pasta and meat cookery has so far been exemplary, winning plaudits from current judges and former contestants alike.

However, it was in his quarter-final that Mike really made a statement. Critic William Sitwell said that he "couldn't fault" his Hong Kong-inspired duck dish.

When is the MasterChef Final?

This year's competition will end after 18 episodes on Friday, April 9.

MasterChef 2021 has been a slightly strange contest, as coronavirus restrictions have limited the number of external cooking challenges available to contestants.
