Pickle lovers, assemble.
If, like us, you’re the type of person who thinks everything tastes better pickled, London has just announced what might be your dream weekend.
A brand new festival dedicated entirely to pickles is coming to east London this year, and yes, it’s exactly as briny as it sounds.
Called The Big Brine, the two-day event will take over Hackney Bridge on September 12–13th, bringing together chefs, fermenters and pickle obsessives for a full celebration of all things salty, sour and crunchy.
Expect a weekend packed with chef demonstrations, fermentation workshops and stalls from artisanal producers showing off everything from homemade pickles to experimental fermented foods.
If it can be dunked in brine, chances are someone will be serving it.
The lineup will feature several well loved cooks and food personalities, but it’s not just about jars and vinegar.
Once the sun goes down on the Saturday, the festival will turn into a full evening party, complete with live DJs and drag performances to keep the celebrations going late into the night.
The festival is being launched by organisers Clarice Downes and Emma Winstanley, who are so passionate about pickling that they’re reportedly self-funding the first edition of the event.
Tickets are expected to cost around £20 and will go on sale at the end of April, giving Londoners plenty of time to prepare themselves for a weekend that will almost certainly smell strongly of vinegar.
While the capital already has smaller pickle-focused events (like the cult autumn festival hosted by the Dog & Bell pub) The Big Brine is aiming to be a much larger celebration dedicated to the art of fermentation.
So, if you’ve ever wanted to spend an entire weekend surrounded by kimchi makers, cornichon enthusiasts and people passionately discussing brine ratios… your moment has finally arrived.
We'll absolutely be seeing you there!
