Brits are mocking Americans for dubbing the humble jacket potato 'British street food', and it's rather iconic.

Can you imagine a world without baked potatoes? We'd argue it's a life that isn't worth living.

But a baked spud slathered in beans and cheese is actually a quintessentially British delicacy that is little known elsewhere around the world, as is demonstrated by Americans losing their minds over it.

The dramz all started after New York based Twitter user, @powcampsurvivor, took to the app to marvel at the jacky p.

"I love British street food. a whole potato topped with unmelted cheese and baked beans. and they line up for hours for it...," they wrote.

Street food!? Now, sure, you can get a jacket potato from a truck, but we'd still say street food is a stretch...

But the debate went deeper than the item's definition. The original image showed a jacket potato topped with cheese and beans – a classic.

But the American followed up with an image of another popular jacket potato topping, going on to scrutinise it.

"A whole potato topped with cheese and tuna. you have to be kidding...' they exclaimed.

....what's funny?

As the tweets did the rounds, more and more furore erupted, and Americans let their disgust be known.

"Cheese with baked beans is crazy," said one person in the comments (we assume they mean crazy delicious...)

While another joked: "They eat like the Germans are still flying overhead".

"British food is one of the worst ones and they think it tastes good somehow," someone else chimed in.

As a fellow hater wrote: "Can you delete this I'm scared."

But for all the hate, there were a brunch of Brits bewildered that those from elsewhere hadn't experienced the jacket potato, rushing to defend it in all its glory.

"Calling a baked potato "a whole potato" in a desperate attempt to make it seem absurd," said one person under all the criticism.

"That sh*t is the best. Cheap, tasty as hell, nutritious and filling," noted another.

"UK baked beans aren’t the same as US baked beans, Jacket potatoes are fire," a third insisted.

As a fourth said: "You'd think every American eats five star gourmet dishes every day with the amount of snobbery in these replies lmao."

The original poster saw all the uproar and had a response to British defenders, writing: "Look I would probably eat the beans and cheese potato, but it would be something I threw together in my apartment while I’m high and had limited ingredients.

"You don't have to be so upset, fish and chips is still good."

You know what, their loss, eh?

Now, if you'll excuse us, this has left us craving a jacket potato...
