Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

The argument over whether food can make you horny has been raging for centuries. Depending on who you believe, anything from oysters, to chocolate to asparagus can help make mealtimes sexy again. Historically, not every ingredient has been included on this exclusive list. But, in 2019, British crisp manufacturers have decided that it’s high time that their products are included in the party.

Premium potato chip producers Tyrell’s have announced that, fresh for 2019, they will be making their first ever “aphrodisiac crisps” available to the British public. Accompanying advertising claims that the new honey and chilli flavour will “heat up date night as both ingredients have provocative effects on the body by releasing endorphins and increasing your heart rate”.

The crisps themselves come in a package embossed with Tyrell’s signature stylish design, complete with a black and white photo of a smiling husband and wife. If you look a little closer, however, there’s more to the scene than meets the eye. The woman, for instance, seems to be thrusting a suggestive chilli towards her husband, just as he is about to dip his whole hand into a honeypot. The image gives the impression of an extremely unorthodox Valentine’s Day.

It’s no accident that this latest addition to the Tyrrel’s line-up includes chilli and honey as key ingredients. Chilli has long been regarded as a powerful stimulant in the bedroom, due to its fiery and invigorating qualities, while some studies have also suggested that honey could be a natural libido booster by encouraging hormone production. Whether or not they work when they’re dusted on a crisp is another matter entirely.

Speaking to The Metro about the release of the new flavour, Tyrell’s marketing manager Sarah Lawson was confident that the product could make snacking on February 14th extra special. “At Tyrrells, we’re always looking for ways to introduce new and different additions that bring our unique and often quirk personality to life.” She revealed, adding, “Our new Honey and Chilli variety has an extra special place in our hearts as it is the first crisp with aphrodisiac properties that’s ever been created.”

Despite Lawson’s claims that this is the first time fried potato snacks have muscled their way into the Valentine’s market, there are actually a surprising number of times when producers have used romance to shift stock. In 2014, Walker’s used Valentine’s Day as an excuse to ask their audience which flavours they “loved” the most, while “Single Pringle” has been part of a singleton’s lexicon for years. Though Tyrell’s might be doing it more explicitly than other crisps, this is hardly untrodden territory.

Though early reviews, most notably from The Metro have been pretty positive, it remains to be seen whether the new crisps can have the amorous effect that they advertise. Regardless whether or not it works, Tyrell’s can at least claim that they’ve managed to make pre-dinner snacking much more erotic than it otherwise would be.
