British supermarket Iceland may have created the country’s spiciest ever chicken wings

Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

For some reason, I went a long time before I tired my first chicken wing, but when I eventually had them, it was as if I’d finally seen the light. And when you make those wings spicy – it’s even better!

Spicy food itself has plenty of positive sides other than proving you can handle the heat. There have been studies that suggest that the capsaicin found in chilli peppers is linked to increased fat burning, and others that suggest they could lower the risk of heart disease. Yet, even without those reasons, it’s worth it just for the flavour.

If you’re thinking of branching out into munching some even hotter chicken wings but don’t want to pay top dollar for them, you could try out the latest addition to Iceland. The supermarket’s Red Hot Chicken Wings claim to be the hottest on offer in the UK, scoring 720,000 on the Scoville Scale.

To put that in perspective, a jalapeño pepper is usually between 2,500 to 8,000 heat units – so if that’s too much for you, it may be time to call it a day.

“BEWARE: These chicken wings are not to be taken lightly, they are seriously hot and should only be consumed under adult supervision,” Iceland says. “We would recommend having a pot of cooling yoghurt, a pint of milk, latex gloves, protective goggles and maybe even a fire extinguisher close to hand.”

A 630g bag of the wings will only set you back £3, and they can be cooked from frozen or thrown straight onto the barbecue. It’s not exactly close to the 1,500,000 on the Scoville Scale that ‘The Reaper’ pepper attained, but it’s nothing to sniff at.

The Reaper has been recognised by the Guinness World Record Book as the hottest chili pepper in the world, but this one may have the best spice-to-price ratio.
