Chef flies to the Bahamas to feed survivors in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian

Legendary chef Jose Andres has brought his non-profit organisation, “World Central Kitchen”, to the Bahamas in order to help victims of the devastating hurricane that has ripped through the region. On the 31st of August, Andres tweeted that he and the organisation were heading to Nassau by plane, before completing the journey to Freeport, placing them at the centre of the tragedy that is currently unfolding. 

Throughout his time in the region, Andres has continually tweeted updates, informing followers as to the situation on the ground. On September 1st, he shared a map of the region, captioned: 

“How do we organize a response in Bahamas? Here’s our current map we are working from…. @WCKitchen has kitchens ready to go and shelters mapped out. If kitchens are destroyed, we build one and cook in big paella pans!”

Over the course of the next few days, Andres shared a series of updates regarding developments on the ground, during which he praised the Atlantis Paradise Island resort for their help with relief efforts. In an interview with CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, Andres revealed that he and the WCK team “are going to (aim to serve) 10,000 meals” during their time on the islands.

Aside from their efforts in the Bahamas, WCK has forged a reputation as one of the world’s leading food focused humanitarian organisations. They have previously won praise for their efforts after the devastating wildfires in California in 2018, as well as their assistance in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. It was partly his response to these two crises that saw Andres nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2018. 

The situation in the Bahamas is undoubtedly extremely serious. In an interview with the Associated Press, a local hurricane relief worker described the scene as “It’s total devastation. It’s decimated.
