Twisted Tries: Our verdict on TikTok Creme Egg croissants

Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

TikTok is a weird and wonderful place. It put baked feta pasta on the map, but it also brought us culinary horrors like Oreo sushi and meat-wrapped spaghetti.

In truth, you never quite know what you’re going to get when you swipe through the app, which is why we always approach TikTok recipes with a healthy dose of scepticism.

The latest trend to hit TikTok is no exception. Introducing the Creme Egg Croissant.

There’s no denying the fanfare these bad boys have received online in the last few weeks, in the run up to Easter – but are they any good? Our senior writer, Joanna, puts the recipe to the test…

First impressions

Full disclosure, I don’t have a sweet tooth, so I’m not overly excited about the ultra buttery sugar rush that’s about to come my way.

‘Surely I won’t manage more than a bite?’, I think to myself as I watch the recipe play out on my phone screen. Truthfully, I’d rather put marmite in a croissant, or cheese, or just about anything savoury.

Of course, in the interest of investigative journalism, I’m more than willing to be won over. On the whole, I can see the appeal of Creme Egg croissants, even if the idea doesn’t personally get me going.

Armed with a box of Creme Eggs, some croissant dough and an egg, alongside a video from TikTokers @thisisplanetfood, I head to the kitchen to see if the TikTok recipe lives up to the hype.

The recipe

I’m very much not a chef, and even I’ll admit this recipe looks like a piece of cake. There are a fair few Creme Egg croissant recipes knocking around on TikTok, but the method is largely the same.

All you have to do is buy a tub of pre-made croissant dough, some Creme Eggs and an egg. Then, break the dough up and then roll a chocolate egg into each slice, pop a bit of egg wash over the top and bake.

This recipe is largely made using an air-fryer, but for those who don’t have one (like me) you can also use an oven.

Attempting Creme Egg croissants

As I crack open my croissant dough, I’m feeling confident. This recipe is as easy as they come. Surely I won’t mess this up, right?

The first hurdle hits me almost instantly, when I realise my pre-rolled croissant dough has defrosted and has all stuck together. This means I have to roll it all out again and cut out the croissant shapes from scratch.

It’s an easily avoidable error, and one that probably adds a good five minutes onto the process (and makes my croissants way less fluffy). Don’t be like me, folks, keep your dough cold.

Crisis resolved, I begin placing my Creme Eggs on top of the dough. Now, let’s see how easy it is to turn them into croissants…

It turns out, quite hard. Three croissants in I realise it’s all in the placement of the egg.

Set your Creme Egg down horizontally so it sits at the bottom of your doughy triangle and wrap the two corners around it so they hug both ends of the chocolate. Then, you fold over the remaining pointy end of the dough and you’re in business.

You can see from my croissants that it took me a while to get the knack of it, but it’s all about trying, eh?

Next up is the egg wash – no problems there. Then, we bake. I set my oven to 200 degrees, pop a 15 minute timer on my phone and wait.

One thing I will say is that the speed at which these croissants cook is very satisfying, and the smell of melting Creme Eggs is unrivalled. My flat smells 10/10.

Opening the oven at the end of the bake, the croissants are a nice golden brown, even if they are sitting in a foamy puddle of Creme Egg juice, which has seeped out a few cracks in the dough.

I realise my mistake straight away – sealing your pastry is key, folks – but hey, you live and you learn.

The good news is, the croissants still look kind of presentable when they’re placed on a plate – and for a TikTok recipe, that’s certainly a key factor.

The Taste Test

Ok, the important part: the taste. At this point, I’m actually pretty excited to eat these. Hell, I may even have developed a sweet tooth in the process.

I tentatively pick up the smallest croissant and nibble off a corner, and to my surprise it way surpasses my expectations. It’s sweet, sure, but the buttery croissant dough offsets the chocolate and its oozy filling perfectly.

Before I know it I’m batting away my housemates and eating another one…and that’s quite a compliment coming from a savoury-head like me.

Is this the most sophisticated TikTok recipe known to man? No, but it’s a tasty one.

All it takes is three ingredients and some common sense (which I’ll admit, I certainly lacked at points), but if you’ve got some excess Creme Eggs lying around this weekend, I’d definitely suggest giving it a go.
