London restaurant serves epic ostrich egg brunch

Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

If Instagram’s obsession with yolk has taught us anything, it’s that there’s no such thing as too much egg. If you want to make social media drool, simply capture the languid drip of a bursting golden sack and watch the likes roll in. The internet is a sucker for brunch.

However, if you think you’ve seen everything that the world of eggy foodporn has to offer, there is still a way that you can up the ante. At Florentine cafe in London, customers can have the option of supersizing their breakfast – substituting an ordinary chicken egg for the biggest alternative on the planet.

For £75, you and four friends can tuck into a cooked ostrich egg breakfast – complete with all your favourite trimmings, only super-sized. Included on the plate are sausages, bacon, mushrooms, baked beans and roasted tomatoes. The main event, however, is the frisbee-sized fried egg that sits at its centre.

As you might imagine, preparing an ostrich egg is far less straightforward than nipping to Tesco’s for a half-dozen carton. Ostrich eggshells are incredibly thick, requiring substantially more force than a gentle tap on a kitchen counter to crack. The yolk is also far richer and is described as having a buttery taste compared to chicken.

To make ordering even more complicated, Florentine’s ostriches are unpredictable, to say the least. Eggs have to be ordered in advance as the kitchen cannot guarantee a regular supply and, at the time of writing, the ostriches have stopped laying altogether due to unfavourable weather conditions, according to the website.

However, if you do find yourself with a craving for giant food without the wherewithal to order it, Florentine still has you covered. Also included on the menu is the epic 2.2kg Herculean burger, complete with cheddar cheese, portobello mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, streaky bacon, black truffle, chips, sweet potato fries and assorted dips. Even if ostrich eggs are unavailable, there’s more than one way to order an imposing meal.
