A man has been fatally stabbed by another customer in a fight over a Popeye’s chicken sandwich.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, October 4, at around 7pm at a branch of the fast-food chain in Oxon Hill in Maryland. Shocked bystanders who witnessed the fatal knife attack described the altercation as stemming over the victim attempting to cut in line. The attacker got into an altercation with them, and asked them to step outside, where they murdered them.
Law enforcement was summoned, and police discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood in the parking lot outside. The victim was rushed to the hospital, but died as a result of his injuries.
Images of the crime scene have since been leaked to social media, which show a poster for the popular sandwich in the window of the restaurant, which has been cordoned off by forensics.
Fox News reports that detectives interviewed witnesses and gathering evidence at the scene, and have combed through CCTV footage to establish a suspect and a motive. The identity of the victim has not been made public.
Per British tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail, police spokesperson Jennifer Donelan stated: “Our homicide detectives are hard at work on this one, but we have been able to determine preliminarily that this is related to the release of the sandwich here at this restaurant.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the fast-food chain told The Mail: “We are very sad to hear about the tragedy in Maryland tonight. We do not yet know whether this was the result of a dispute over one of our products or something unrelated, but there is no reason for someone to lose their life on a Monday night in a parking lot.”
They added: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends and we are fully cooperating with local authorities.”
