Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

Everyone enjoys an epic survival story. Last week, a tale that would give Bear Grylls something to chew over made headlines around the world, when Jeremy Taylor was found alive in his truck five days after becoming trapped by a blizzard. Together with his trusty dog, Ally, Jeremy was forced to survive sub zero temperatures with nothing but a few sachets of Taco Bell sauce for sustenance. Incredibly, Jeremy and Ally emerged shaken, hungry, but otherwise unharmed. It was heartwarming stuff.

Now, however, there may be even more good news for the Taylor clan. In a public statement, Taco Bell revealed that Jeremy’s survival strategy had not gone unnoticed by the head honchos at America’s favourite Tex Mex chain. Congratulating him for his ingenuity and or inadvertently revealing the nutritional value of the restaurant’s signature condiments, the business decided to reward Jeremy with an entire year’s supply of free Taco Bell. It almost makes nearly freezing to death in an SUV worth it.

As part of their statement on his heroics, Taco Bell revealed, “We’re very glad Jeremy and Ally are okay,” before adding, “We know our sauce packets are amazing, but this takes it to a whole new level! We’re in touch with Jeremy and have sent him a well-deserved care package, a year’s supply of Taco Bell, and of course, all the sauce packets that come with it.” As welcome as the gesture will undoubtedly be, there’s been no comment yet on whether Jeremy is totally sick of the sight of sauce.

Although the story has both a happy and delicious ending, for a long time it looked as though things would take a dark turn. 36-year-old Jeremy first became trapped after leaving his home in Oregon to go and get petrol for his truck. However, on his way back from the gas station, his SUV became stuck offroad in a giant drift. After attempting to fight his way out on foot, he and Ally were forced to return to the car when conditions deteriorated still further. From there, his troubles were just beginning.

According to reports, Jeremy managed to survive by “periodically starting his vehicle” to stay warm and snacking on the few packets of Taco Bell sauce that lay scattered around his vehicle. Five days after becoming stuck, Jeremy and Ally were discovered by a passing snowmobiler, who immediately contacted the authorities.

Speaking afterwards about his ordeal, Jeremy revealed just how fortunate he is to still be with us. In a Facebook post, he wrote, “Thank you everyone, I’m safe my Ally dog is safe. I really appreciate all the help. Got lucky, lets never do that again. I’ll be in touch with everyone soon (sic.),” before adding, “Taco Bell fire sauce saves lives!” It might not be the first thing that most of us would reach for in a survival situation, but there’s no doubt that, on this occasion, Taco Bell really did deliver on every level.
