Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

January is a funny month for food. For millions of people all over the world, it’s the ideal time to detox and act as piously as possible, living off nothing but raw beets and carrot juice for a month. For a business that might rely on the public’s baser foodie inclinations, this new sanctimony is nothing short of a disaster. As a result, January is also the ideal time to keep an eye out for some of the fast food industry’s most exciting announcements as they try anything and everything to keep the punters rolling in. So far, 2019 hasn’t disappointed.

Already this month, fans have been drooling over the rerelease of Burger King’s cini-minis, Domino’s new Australian 40-inch pizza and the prospect of McDonald’s cheesy bacon fries, putting countless would-be diets at risk. However, as intoxicating as these new kids on the block undoubtedly are, they pale into insignificance when compared to the latest news from Golden Arches HQ. For the first time ever, McDonald’s customers are about to be able to put bacon on a Big Mac.

Starting on the 30th of January, the franchise will offer their fans the chance to upgrade the standard Big Mac sandwich with the welcome addition of three slices of applewood smoked bacon. The option will also be available on the brand’s beloved Quarter Pounder burger, making this one of the most significant alterations to two members of McDonald’s classic menu lineup in living memory.

In a public statement, McDonald’s Manager of Culinary Innovation and chef Michael Haracz said, “People love bacon, and they love our iconic Big Mac, fresh beef Quarter Pounder burgers and World Famous Fries, so we had to see what would happen if we combined all that tastiness. As a bacon enthusiast myself, I’m proud to say that we’ve done right by bacon fans and I can’t wait for our customers to try these Classics with delicious, thick cut Applewood smoked bacon for themselves.”

The new Big Mac Bacon is being billed by the business as “an exciting twist on the iconic fan favorite’s 50-year history,” and is believed by many to be the ultimate rebuttal to the new year’s early dietary trends. The new recipe comes fresh on the back of the first changes to the iconic sandwich in over 40 years, when McDonald’s introduced the Big Mac Jr. and Grand in 2016. Despite the ongoing success of the classic design, it’s clear that nothing is sacred in the eyes of the powers that be.

It remains to be seen whether or not the new bacon burgers will become a permanent fixture on the rapidly changing McDonald’s menu. Much is riding on how receptive the public are to the change and whether they can be persuaded to stop dieting. But, given how much we all love bacon and Big Macs, it feels like bringing the two together can only lead to good things. Let’s hope that the Bacon Big Mac can manage to live up to the hype.
