Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

Christmas can be a lean period for fast-food franchises. At any other time of year, their competition is scattered and divided. Once roast turkey, stuffing and potatoes enter the equation, however, almost everyone ignores burgers and nuggets for a few weeks in order to load up on seasonal specialities. It’s not every day that eating yourself into a coma is socially acceptable. This is why, if a brand wants to compete, they need to come up with something seriously tempting.

As part of an attempt to tempt customers away from sprouts and pigs in blankets, McDonald’s has unveiled its own riff on the Christmas menu. The world’s biggest fast-food franchise will be serving customers a range of vaguely seasonal treats, including Camembert Cheese Melt Dippers and Quality Street-inspired McFlurries. Who says Christmas dinner has to take hours?

The addition of camembert to the chain’s staple Cheese Melt Dippers is an exciting development, while the minty Matchmaker McFlurry has not been seen in restaurants since 2013. While arguably not in the same Christmassy league as other competitors’ seasonal menus, the new options will be a welcome addition for customers looking for a little festive spirit.

Though the twists on menu favourites are bound to excite many McDonald’s fans, their inclusion is arguably secondary to the chain’s main Christmas update. As part of their announcement, McDonald’s also revealed that the classic “Big Tasty” will return after more than a year’s absence from British restaurants, accompanied by a brand new “Chicken Deluxe”.

The Big Tasty, made with beef, cheese, tomato, lettuce and legendary “Big Tasty Sauce” will also be available with bacon for £4.29 or £4.69, while the Chicken Deluxe, which comes with two chicken pieces, relish and mayo, will come in at £5.19. They might not be as Christmassy as cranberry sauce, but they’re certainly more convenient.
