Slow cookers are a conduit for all sorts of weird and magical creations. If you have the impulse, adventurous home cooks can create everything from cheesecakes to entire cooked breakfasts without ever having to turn on the oven. Whether the added convenience is worth it isn’t important – what really matters is that basically anything is possible.
Providing yet more proof that anyone yet to invest in a crockpot is missing out, a daring mum has taken the internet by storm, revealing how to make an epic chocolate orange slow cooker cake. Not only does her recipe reveal how to make a delicious cake without the usual baking faff, but it also includes popular soft drink Fanta as a key ingredient. For fans of unusual indulgent food combos, it really is a win-win.
Posting to the popular Facebook group Crockpot/Slow Cooker Recipes & Tips, Susan Talbot shared detailed instructions for creating the decadent dish. As she explained:
“Mix the Betty Crocker Cake Mix with Two Small Cans of Fanta (150ml each). 1 tsp orange extract
Put a big cake case in the slow cooker. i use a cake tin and a cake liner to keep shape.
Pour the mix into the cake case.
Turn the slow cooker onto high for 1 hour 1/2 – 2 hrs 15mins cooking time varys on your slow cooker so i always check after 1 1/2 hrs
Make sure you put a tea towel in between the lid and the slow cooker.
When cooked, allow the cake to cool down, remove it from the slow cooker and then decorate!
I used the cadburys fudge icing and a Terry’s Chocolate Orange minis with nestle zingy orange matchmakers.”

In an additional note to the group, Talbot added:
“…there is no need for eggs or oil! Just use the cake mix and Fanta. You don’t need to preheat the slow cooker, you turn it onto high after the cake mix is in it! You also don’t need to put anything in the bottom of the slow cooker, just the cake case! Enjoy…forget the calories”
Reaction to the recipe has been almost universally positive. Posting under Talbot’s original photos, one group member declared, “Thank you for sharing I’m definitely trying this mmmmmmm,” while another added, “That looks really delicious.” If you’re on the lookout for a new way to put your cooker through its paces, this might be a great place to start.
