The Home Secretary has raised eyebrows by calling out the “tofu eating wokerati” for travel disruption in a statement in the House of Commons.
Suella Braverman was speaking in defence of the government’s Public Order Bill when she made the comment, which has since sparked widespread criticism on social media.
Watch the clip below:
“Yes, I’m afraid, it’s the Labour Party, it’s the Lib Dems, it’s the coalition of chaos, it’s the Guardian-reading, tofu-eating wokerati, dare I say, the anti-growth coalition that we have to thank for the disruption that we are seeing on our roads today,” she said to fellow MPs on Tuesday.
In response, Labour’s Yvette Cooper branded the Home Secretary’s words “astonishing”.
“Now that Suella Braverman has identified ‘tofu–eating‘ as the main cultural problem facing the country, we need a @BBCNewsnight @BBCr4today investigation: is it the tofu or the way in which we eat tofu that is the enemy here? Is there latent danger IN tofu? Or is it the chewing?,” said a fellow critic on Twitter.
Whilst another wrote: “I like that Suella Braverman thinks eating tofu is something that the electorate will despise.”

“Suella Braverman calling the ‘tofu–eating wokerati’ a ‘coalition of chaos’ is possibly the least self-aware thing I’ve ever seen,” said a third.
As a fourth wrote: “What is wrong with tofu? Suella Braverman is so weird, just randomly slagging off people for eating a really common Asian food?”
“What did tofu ever do to Suella Braverman???,” commented someone else.
Suella Braverman was taking part in the debate following the end of Just Stop Oil’s Dartford Bridge protest, which lasted over 36 hours.
