Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

It would be fair to assume that you’d have to shell out a small fortune for one of the best bottles of gin in the world.

But what if we told you that you could actually stock up at your local Aldi supermarket? Yeah, we probably wouldn’t believe it, either…

It turns out that’s actually the case, though, according to the results from the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC).

The IWSC found that Aldi’s Haysmith’s Rhubarb and Ginger Gin came out on top of all entries, winning 98 points amongst judges and landing a gold medal.

They said of that the gin – which is under 15 quid – was “magnificently well-balanced with the full rich flavours of mouth-watering rhubarb, fiery ginger and chaste juniper.”

“Delectably moist on the finish with the glorious pungency of lip-tingling Jamaican ginger cake, heaped with a generous dollop of deliciously tart rhubarb. Superb,” they added.

Quite the endorsement, ey?

It also beat the likes of Edinburgh Gin’s Rhubarb & Ginger, which costs double the price of Aldi’s bottle.

The gin is being sold in a 700ml purple glass bottle and has an ABV of 40 percent.

It’s for sale for a very respectable £14.99. For one of the best gins in the world, there’s no denying that’s a certified bargain…

Aldi won a grand total of 17 awards during the IWSC competition, proving it is very much the place to stock up on booze.

It had a whopping 10 products in the top-rated entries, meaning the budget supermarket isn’t to be sniffed at by spirit snobs.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK said of the win: “We are extremely proud to have received the highest possible accolade for our own brand spirits.

“Now more than ever, we want to show that low prices don’t mean compromising on quality or taste.”

Prizes also went to Aldi’s Glen Marnoch Limited Edition Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (which cost £17.4 for 75cl), and was praised for its “lovely soft texture and solid length”.

Plus, Aldi’s Haysmith’s Blood Orange Gin won a Bronze medal for its ‘blood orange aromas that broaden on the palate.’
