Pizza Hut is serving SPAM stuffed crust pizzas

Stuffing crusts with anything is a touchy subject for pizza purists. Even if you stick with relatively straightforward mozzarella, you’re bound to irritate fastidious Neapolitan conservatives. Given this reality, you might as well throw caution to the wind and go completely nuts. 

Following in the footsteps of bananas designs like “Hot Dog” and “Cheeseburger”, all-American fast food franchise Pizza Hut has decided to embrace the demented potential of a pizza crust and stuff theirs with Spam. Dubbed the “Spam Supreme Cheesy Bites Pizza”, this meaty behemoth is as intriguing as it is unacceptable. If you want to push your pizza boundaries, you’ve come to the right place. 

Currently available exclusively in the Philippines, the new pizza design appears to have been inspired by the chain’s wildly successful “Cheesy Bites” upgrade, although the addition of Spam is an obvious spanner in the works. According to the official description on the Pizza Hut Philippines website, the pie features:

“SPAM and cheese filled bites surround a pizza generously topped with chunks of SPAM and mozzarella cheese. Served with marinara dip to compliment your cheesy bites.”

As per a report in Chew Boom, the unorthodox dish will be available at participating locations across the country until the 9th of May. It will also be available in both regular and large sizes for P419 (US $8.25) and P639 (US $12.55), respectively.

If, for any reason, the prospect of one Spam Supreme pizza leaves you hungry for more, the Pizza Hut website is also promoting an extended “SPAM Triple Pizza Treat” for P699 ($14). This outrageous combo includes three separate pies, including a ham and pineapple-topped Hawaiian, presumably as a nod to Spam’s connection with the Pacific island group.

In an age where authenticity is often given extra weight, it can be easy to become too cautious in our approach to food. Thank goodness we have creative radicals ready to turn traditions on their head. Even if the results are slightly scary, the world of pizza is infinitely more exciting.
