Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

This summer has been the backdrop to a fair few interesting headlines. Britain has decided to blow up its political system and itself. The Amazon has turned into Mordor. The Avengers finally managed to defeat Thanos. However, for anyone interested in food, there has only been one saga worth paying any attention to. That is, of course, the furore surrounding Popeyes’ indomitable fried chicken sandwich.

As soon as the sandwiches hit the shelves on August 12th, the fast food world turned upside down. The world and his wife was determined to get a taste, causing shortages across the country and unprecedented demand. The chaos even had some people comparing the new sandwich to industry leaders Chick-Fil-A, claiming that Popeyes had ousted them from the top of the tree. It was deep fried disruption, the likes of which no one had ever seen. And then, as soon as it had started, it was gone.

Despite creating the defining fast food success story of 2019, Popeyes were ultimately unable to keep up with demand. Eventually, the chain were forced to admit that they were sold out of sandwiches, though they stressed that they were pulling out all the stops to get them back on the menu. Understandably, this did not go down well with customers.

However, rather than risk irritating everyone who had enjoyed some southern fried summer fling, Popeyes came up with a cunning solution. CNN reports that the chain are now inviting customers to come to the restaurant and make the iconic sandwich for themselves, provided they can bring their own buns.

Supporting what seems like an unprecedented move for the business, Popeyes’ head of marketing Bruno Cardinali told CNN, “While we work to get the sandwich back in our restaurants, we wanted to offer our guests a fun way to satisfy their Popeyes sandwich cravings.”

This was echoed by a tweet from the official Popeyes Twitter account, where the company stated, “Try our new BYOB! It’s basically The Sandwich! Only no mayo. Or pickles. And you bring your own bun… Really it’s just three tenders…” Whether or not it stacks up to the original sandwich is likely debatable. However, there’s no doubt that Popeyes’ HQ have come up with an innovative alternative.
