Somebody baked life-sized cakes of Game of Thrones characters and left them by Tower Bridge

For the first time ever in April, and surprisingly nothing to do with global warming, winter is here. The final season of HBO’s bloodthirsty fantasy epic has got everyone a little hot under the collar. People who are ordinarily extremely sensible now look like five year olds on Christmas eve, while those who would never have been seen dead in the company of anyone gabbling in a made up language now can’t wait to see who Drogon decides to roast next. Everyone is caught up in the excitement. Cooks, apparently, are no exception.

As the world gets ready to return to Westeros, businesses around the world have been racking their brains to come up with a way to hitch themselves to the bandwagon. Already, we’ve seen Game of Thrones burgers, milkshakes, whiskies and Oreos make their way onto the market. However, possibly the most impressive tribute comes not from an established international brand, but from a conceptual artist with a penchant for cake.

On Wednesday, dedicated food artist Michelle Wibowo unveiled her latest project in front of London’s iconic Tower Bridge. A testament to all things Thrones, Wibowo’s latest work consists of three life-sized sculptures of some of the central characters from the show – the three Stark siblings, Jon Snow, Sansa and Arya. It proved to be quite a challenge.

Every sculpture was constructed entirely out of a mixture of sponge and icing, made using Stork baking ingredients. Stork, who commissioned the project, specified that they wanted the end result to look as realistic as possible – a task that Wibowo took extremely seriously. Each of the three statues took approximately 300 hours to construct, including adding painstaking details like armour, weaponry and facial features.

At 173cm tall, the largest of the cake figures is Night’s Watch Warden, and potential contender for the Iron Throne, Jon Snow. Weighing a whopping 150-pounds and depicted with his famous sword “Longclaw”, the cake-Snow bears an uncanny resemblance to his portrayer, Kit Harrington. The other two figures are equally impressive. Combined, the three figures tip the scales at a staggering 400 pounds – not bad for showstoppers that could have made suitable centrepieces for the Red Wedding.

Although the new Game of Thrones cakes are undoubtedly impressive in their scope and scale, they are far from the only ambitious project that Wibowo has undertaken over the past few years. In 2018, she constructed an entire BFG sculpture out of Mr Kipling cakes, while she has also attempted commissions as ambitious as a recreation of Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel in sprinkles and Van Gogh’s Portrait of Dr. Gachet in Jelly Belly. While Game of Thrones is very much the watchword of the moment, it seems highly likely that next time there is a culturally significant televisual event, Wibowo will be on hand to immortalise it in something edible.
