Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

Arguably the only good thing about the onset of winter and the subsequent quagmire of wet, grey misery is that hot chocolate reappears on the menu. Summer is a great time for many foods, but a hot, fat cup of liquid luxury is the last thing you want to chug when it’s 30 degrees and you’re sweating like an anxious piglet. Thankfully, now we’re all wrapping up warm again, this is not something we have to worry about for the foreseeable future.

Naturally, the reemergence of hot chocolate season means that competition for business is fierce. It might be delicious, but a hot chocolate isn’t an everyday sort of treat. If you want to persuade the punters, you need to have a scrummy sounding USP, and few franchises have mastered the art of delicious drink-naming quite as effectively as Starbucks. This year, they’ve done it again.

Apparently dropping on November 5th, though some sources claim it is already available if purchased through the Starbucks app, the famous coffee chain is preparing to flog an all-new toasted marshmallow hot chocolate. Reportedly made with a rich mocha sauce, marshmallow syrup, marshmallow flavoured whipped cream topping, and a caramelised sugar crown, it certainly does the job of selling itself on paper.

Unsurprisingly, this isn’t the first time that Starbucks has offered up something delicious and chocolatey on a seasonal menu. Last year, the chain served salted caramel brownie hot chocolate, which included a brownie-flavoured whipped cream, chunks of brownie and salted caramel sauce. Whether this year’s effort sounds as delicious is up for debate.

Of course, it’s not just what’s on the menu that gets Starbucks customers excited at this time of year. November also heralds the return of the business’ red Christmas cups, which have become something of a fan icon in recent years. Combined with an ott hot chocolate, it looks likely that winter 2019 will be as busy as ever for the world’s most famous coffee vendor.
