A basic burger is a thing of beauty. It’s tough to go wrong wrong with beef and bread at the best of times, but when you add cheese, bacon and everything else into the equation, you end up with something truly tasty. There’s a reason why burgers and their relatives are eaten absolutely everywhere.

But, for all the simple, delicious sandwiches out there, there are plenty of chefs who seem determined to tear up the burger rule book. For these guys, nothing could be worse than sticking with tradition and playing it safe. Unsurprisingly, this means that they have come up with some really wild creations over the years. 1. Cheeseburger in a can

In the inevitable nuclear apocalypse, radiation ravaged survivors are, presumably, still going to enjoy fast food. This explains the invention of the cheeseburger in a can. Featuring a pre-sauced hamburger patty, this hideous invention can keep for far longer than a traditional burger – though after a bite you might long for the sweet embrace of a bomb blast.

2. Fried Frog Burger

There are two strange features that make the fried frog burger a noteworthy addition to this list. 3. The Fleur Burger

4. The Hamdog

The hamdog features two halves of a burger patty, split down the centre by a hot dog. Served in a custom Saturn-shaped sesame bun, this has got to be the ultimate way to sit on the fast food fence.

5. Hot fudge sundae burger

Mixing mains and desserts is a time honoured tradition for unorthodox foodies, but few can possibly be as bonkers as this. Served at McGuire’s Irish Pub in Florida, a black angus patty is straddled by a scoop of vanilla and hot fudge sauce to create one of the weirdest taste experiences you’re likely to find.

6. Quadruple Bypass Burger

The pride and joy of the infamous Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas is the aptly named quadruple bypass burger. Four patties, cheese, bacon and tomatoes are stacked ontop of each other in a colossal sandwich that weighs in at a whopping 10,000 calories and has been cited as one of the worst junk foods in America.

7. The Whole Damn Farm Burger

Though the Quad Bypass is certainly impressive in stature, it lacks the variety of other whacky burger-based creations. When it comes to exploring the entire tapestry of sandwich fillings, few designs can touch the Whole Damn Farm Burger. As the name implies, this beast contains two beef burgers, barbecued pulled pork, bacon, bacon jam, fried chicken thigh, honey roast ham chunks and three different cheeses.
