This restaurant serves cake and wine for breakfast

Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

Liquid breakfasts are usually reserved for very specific circumstances. Unless your in an airport or at a festival, cracking open a can before you’ve had a chance to line your stomach is usually regarded with an understandable degree of suspicion. Bottomless brunches might be increasingly de rigueur, but breakfast is still a step too far for some. That, however, could be about to change.

In a flagrant rejection of the social niceties surrounding early drinking, a restaurant in Nashville, Tenessee, has decided to throw convention out the window and offer customers a breakfast menu featuring cake and wine. It is exactly as awesome as it sounds. 

Lou, which is the brainchild of ex-Gjusta chef Mailea Weger, is inspired by the Parisian dining scene and is arguably the most exciting way to start your day since bacon sandwiches became a thing. In an interview with Food and Wine, Weger explained how she became inspired to start the restaurant, revealing:

“On the very rare occasion that there was wine left open the next morning from the night before, I would have coffee and my husband, living a very French life, would start to pour a glass of wine. And he would say, ‘I’m having breakfast wine! It was really only because there was maybe one glass left, so it was just a good way to utilize product that wouldn’t have held for that much longer.’”

Alongside the option of breakfast wine, Lou also serves special “breakfast cake” – inspired by seasonal ingredients and something of a signature for the kitchen. When the cafe opened in September, the menu featured a “warm hazelnut cake”, served with “cacao nibs, blueberries and orange”. If that isn’t worth waking up for, I don’t know what is. 

It might sound as though Lou’s USP is just an excuse for enormous overindulgence. Though this is partly true, there’s more to it than that. As Weger put it to Food and Wine:

“It’s the concept of being able to really feel like you’re treating yourself, that’s what both of those ideas really are. It’s something that’s really fun, and a little bit frivolous, in a sense. But at the core, it’s still really not, because it’s a really healthy cake that’s kind of good for you. And then the wine is natural wine…sometimes it just makes you feel really special and celebratory, even if it’s just a random Thursday.”
