Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

In news that could have nonnas everywhere recoiling in horror, a traditional Italian dessert is getting a major bite-sized makeover.

As part of a plan to convert the world into sandwich cookie obsessives, legendary snack merchant Oreo has unveiled a slate of whacky new flavours – including, to presumed Italian chagrin, tiramisu.

Anyone who keeps up to speed with Oreo’s cookie making strategy knows that they’re not averse to pushing out the flavour boat. Already, the start of 2020 has seen the brand announce plans for both Chocolate Marshmallow and Caramel Coconut-flavoured cookies. However, it’s the new tiramisu concept that has really captured the public imagination.

The news was first broken by popular Instagram account @CandyHunting, who shared a picture of the new packaging, accompanied by the caption:

“I see you, tiramisu! ? New Tiramisu Oreos will be out soon! If you’re thinking, “Weren’t Tiramisu Oreos already out?” Those were Tiramisu Oreo Thins out overseas. If you’re also thinking, “How soon is ‘soon’?” I’m not sure. They might be launched with the Caramel Coconut and Chocolate Marshmallow Oreos in January or they might be a bit after that.”

As @CandyHunting alluded to, the new release may well have been prompted by the success of a “thin” version of flavour in South Korea, where they have been popular for some time. However, judging by the depiction on the new-look packaging, these cookies will be much closer to the classic Oreo design than their slimmed-down cousins.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the new release is that the flavour appears to be prepared as a “double-stuffed” sandwich cookie, like the fan-favourite of the same name. Even if you aren’t a fan of classical coffee-themed Italian desserts, more Oreo filling is surely exciting news for everyone.
