Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

We’re no strangers to unexpected food combinations here at Twisted, in fact, it’s kind of our bread and butter.

But even we raised an eyebrow when we saw what Heinz was cooking up over on its UK Instagram page.

Anyone for a cake made of tomato soup?!

The recipe saw the Heinz team pouring a tin of their Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup into a mixing bowl before adding all the dry cake ingredients you’d expect – sugar, flour, cocoa powder.

In went some eggs, too, and everything was mixed together.

Heinz told followers: “This hack will change your baking game forever,” promising a “super smooth chocolatey mixture”.

You might expect the cake to taste like tomato soup, but apparently all that happens is you end up with a “delicious, moist chocolate cake.”

The cake was inspired by former Bake Off favourite, John Whaite, who previously made a chocolate fudge cake with tomato soup, and told fans it was ‘life-changing’.

He says he actually got the idea from 1950s America.

“The tomato soup just makes it so fudgey and sweet as well. It sweetens it that little bit more,” he explained on Steph’s Packed Lunch.

Reacting to Heinz’ recreation of the classic, it’s safe to say that not everyone was convinced.

“You guys have lost it,” said one person in the comments.

Whilst another wrote: “That’s it, I’m calling the police.”

“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should,” penned somebody else.

Hey, you haven’t even tried it yet, guys!

Alongside all the nay-sayers there were several advocates for the recipe, too.

“You can’t taste the tomatoes, it makes the cake really moist and the cake is delicious,” said one.

As another agreed: “I’ve made courgette cake and had beetroot chocolate cake, so why not!”

If this has captivated your attention, Heinz has dropped the recipe, too.
