Chef shares 'life-changing' trick for slicing onions perfectly every time

There are a few cooking hacks that once learnt you'll never go back from.

Case in point? This one French chef's advice on how to cut an onion super-thinly every time.

Let's face it, knife skills don't come easily unless you're a pretty competent chef.

But the best thing about this hack is you don't need a knife at all.

Bare with us and all will make sense...

You see, TikToker @cases_tips instead relies on two other things you'll probably always have in the kitchen to make the "perfect" thin strips of onion...a fork and a vegetable peeler.

The chef begins by stabbing the onion with the fork, then holds it steady as he slices the onion and goes back and forth with the peeler.

Low and behold, perfectly uniform, thin pieces of onion materialise.

The hack has since been liked over 5.6 million times, has almost 23,000 comments and 1.1 million saves.

Reacting to the video, people were certainly excited about the cooking tip.

"This. Is. LIFE. CHANGING," said one person in reply.

Whilst another wrote: "What sorcery is this?!"

"Ok. This wins this internet!! Mind. Blown," chimed in somebody else.

As another said: "Where were you just yesterday when i was making french onion soup?!?" Bad luck, mate!

"Wait, people aren't doing this? I've been doing this with most vegetables," said someone else.

Someone always has to be the know it all, don't they?!

The trick isn't just great for onions, as you can also do the same thing when slicing cabbage to make coleslaw.

The only difference in this case is that you need to chop the cabbage in half and then place the sliced surface of the vegetable down onto the chopping board – no fork necessary.

The chef said the hack is also "perfect for a salad," adding: "The main tip here is to adjust the pressure of the peeler on the cabbage according to the thickness you're looking for."
