Who needs culinary school when an app TikTok exists? We’ve lost count of the amount of times we’ve been scrolling and came across a cooking hack which has quite literally changed our lives.
But today a slightly more divisive tip is doing the rounds. Is it genius, or is it a complete and utter waste of time? The jury is still out….
The hack offers a way to de-clove a whole head of garlic in less than a minute, with step by step instructions you can follow.
The video was shared on TikTok by Chrissy Teigen’s cooking page, Cravings by Chrissy Teigen, and has since been watched almost 600,000 times on the platform.
Let us enlighten you on how to peel garlic, according to TikTok.
In the caption, the account explains: “Put a whole garlic bulb (unpeeled and untrimmed) in a bowl and cover halfway with water.
“Microwave for 30 seconds, before removing from the water and patting dry.”
Then, all you need to do is chop off the root end of the garlic with a sharp chef’s knife and squeeze out the cloves.
“Some may need a little coaxing,” they add. “But the skins should pop off without the sticky, garlic paper mess”.
@cravingsbychrissyteigen Peel a whole head of garlic in under a minute 🧄✨ Put a whole garlic bulb (unpeeled and untrimmed) in a bowl and cover halfway with water. Microwave for 30 seconds.✨ Remove from the water and pat dry.✨ Using a utility or chef’s knife, slice off the root end of the garlic.✨ Gently squeeze out the cloves of garlic. Some may need a little coaxing, but the skins should pop off without the sticky, garlic paper mess!
After watching the demo, some budding cooks couldn’t quite believe the time they had wasted peeling the skin off each garlic bulb individually.
“Wait… WHAT? I’ve wasted SO much time,” said one person in the comments.
Whilst another wrote: “Omg totally doing this”.
“The stuff I’m learning in this app…. I’m addicted. I want to delete it… but, then I see things like this…..,” commented a third.
It may have won over some TikTok cooks, but others weren’t so sure.
“Anthony Bourdain once said about garlic, ‘Too lazy to peel fresh? You don’t deserve to eat garlic’,” joked one in the comments.
Whilst another added: “I feel like I never use a full bulb at once though!!”
Still on the fence about this hack, we decided to enlist the thoughts of Twisted chef and founder Tom Jackson, and let’s just say he was rather unimpressed.
“Oh look! Another garlic peeling hack that I will never put into practice,” he said. “I don’t understand why people need so many peeled cloves of garlic in such a short space of time, and, yes, I’ve made chicken with 40 cloves of garlic (twice in my life).
“These ones would be all waterlogged, bruised, and steamy. I hate this hack. I will never use this.”
So, we guess that’s that then.
