You might have consumed your bodyweight in chocolate and hot cross buns over the bank holiday, but as far as we’re concerned, there’s no need to stop indulging now.
The likelihood is you’ve still got a bunch of Easter leftovers in the cupboard, so why not get creative and see what you can knock together?
Over on TikTok, there are several Easter recipes doing the rounds, from DIY Biscoff Easter eggs that melt into hot chocolate to Creme Egg croissants.
But this recipe might just be the most eye-wateringly-sweet one of the bunch.
Introducing the Caramilk hot cross bun toastie.
@cake_mail NEW TREND ALERT! 😍📣 Who are you trying this with? #sydney #viral #newtrend #hotcrossbuns #snack #nutella #caramilk #easter
The recipe was first shared by TikTok page, @cake_mail, and whilst it might not be everyone’s cuppa tea, the 708,000 views it has amassed proves that there are some who are definitely into it.
To make the hot cross bun toasties, all you need is some leftover buns, some Caramilk chocolate and a jar of Nutella.
As is often the way on TikTok, the recipe isn’t that complex. Simply cut your hot cross buns open and slather the inside with Nutella, as if you’re making a sandwich.
Then, layer a broken up bar of Cadbury’s Caramilk on top until all the surface area is covered and shove it in the toastie maker.
If your sweet-tooth still isn’t appeased, the TikToker suggests whacking in some Oreos, too (but honestly, we can’t imagine who would want to add *more* to this chocolatey concoction).
Simply toast the buns until the tops are crispy, cut them in half and wait for the chocolate filling to dribble out the centre. Whether this toastie is your sort of thing or not, you have to admire that Caramilk ooze.
There’s no denying this recipe isn’t exactly fine dining, and it has been a crowd divider on the app.
“My teeth fell out watching this,” joked one person in the comments.
Meanwhile, another tagged a mate and wrote: “Bro the poor hot cross buns”.
Others were more into it, though.
“Big yes pls,” said a fellow commenter.
As a fourth wrote: “I reckon this would actually go hard with less filling”.
On this, we agree. In our humble opinion, the concept of a hot cross bun toastie is pretty banging, but in this case there probably is such thing as too much chocolate.
We could heartily get behind a hot cross bun toastie with either Nutella or Caramilk, but we’re just not sure anything is improved with the addition of both.
To elevate this recipe, we’d suggest throwing in some salty peanut butter or fruit, like strawberries or raspberries, to balance the sugary notes. Plus, we’d advise a slightly lighter lashing of chocolate.
The recipe itself is a great way to use up any leftover hot cross buns, so go wild; get creative – just remember that sometimes less really is more.
