Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

We love making and eating food here at Twisted – but we’ve never considered that food might also be eating us…

Eating is one of the best things in the world. There is very little that comes close to the ecstasy of sitting down with a good meal and just going to town on it.

One of the most refreshing things to eat is fresh fruit. Not only is it healthy for you, but it tastes oh-so-good and you can feel great about yourself for doing it.

But it turns out that eating one particular fruit might not be all fun and games, as a viral TikTok has revealed that pineapples eat us while we eat them!

One of my favorite fruits is pineapple, but every time I eat them, my mouth tingles. I read that the fruit contains raphides! Kiwis, grapes, taro, and yams also have large amounts of these crystals. These needles serve as a defensive function against insect herbivors to deter them from eating the plant’s fruits and protect the seeds. The needles work with other chemcial substances, like bromelain in the pineapple, to amplify the effects. #microscope #microbiology #underthemicroscope #microscopy #microcosmos #nature #pineapple #crystals #fyp #fypage #fypシ

Going by the handle SF Microscopy, the scientific account revealed why we feel a tingling sensation in our mouth after chowing down on the exotic fruit.

The narrator begins: “Why do our mouths tingle after eating pineapple?”

The video then explains: “It’s because we are getting stabbed by 1000s of tiny needles called raphides. These crystals of calcium oxalate poke holes in your cell membranes causing irritation.”

Basically, as we’re eating a pineapple, it is essentially stabbing the inside of our mouths and eating away at us… which doesn’t sound that fun.

Naturally, people were quick to flood the comments with their thoughts and it would seem that not a lot of people knew this information.

“When we eat the pineapple, the pineapple eats us,” one user commented, with a second adding: “My daughter ate a whole pineapple when she was 6 and cried after – now she’s 15 she still refuses to eat pineapples again.”

Truthfully, with this new information coming to light, pineapples definitely have a much more sinister look about them.

“That’s its self-defence mechanism, my dad told me about it, essentially pineapple eats you back,” a third person said.

Before you run to throw away any pineapples you have lying around, you should know that the sensation is completely normal and eating pineapples in moderation will do you no harm.

But much like any fruit, too much can cause some unwanted side effects such as pain in the mouth and issues at the other end of your body… if you follow?

So there we have it – eat those pineapples before they eat you!
