American sandwich chain creates “bacon bread” – with bacon baked into the crust

Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

Bacon sandwiches are one of the best things about cooking – period. You can take all the overly complex, 18-ingredient Michelin star dishes in the world, but only a handful of them will be able to beat the simple joy of crispy pork and fluffy bread.

Asking anyone to improve on what is already essentially perfect is obviously tricky. However, one ambitious American sandwich chain has shown that anything is possible, taking the traditional bacon bap blueprint and dialling it up to 11.

From the 5th of September, customers at Texas-based sandwich specialist Schlotzsky’s will be able to get their hands on a very special sandwich, served with actual bacon baked into the bread.

Created in honour of International Bacon Day – a festival that, frankly, doesn’t get the recognition it deserves – the bread will be available on any medium sandwich, including already bacon-heavy favourites like the “Turkey Bacon Club” or the “Beef Bacon Smokecheesy”.

Speaking in a press release to announce the exciting addition, Jennifer Keil, Culinary Lead at Schlotzsky’s, declared:

“If there is anything we’ve learned over the last few months, it is to celebrate the little things in life, and everyone loves a little bacon. Since bread is our specialty, we really wanted to lean into our heritage and offer our guests an extra reason to enjoy our sandwiches.”

Although the meaty upgrade is probably the best thing to happen to sandwiches since sliced bread, there are a few caveats. For starters, the offer will only be available from the 5th to the 12th of September.

Secondly, there will only be a limited amount of bacon bread baked each day. All the more reason to move fast and pig out on porky goodness while you still can.
