Dunkin’ has made ‘DIY donut kits’ so you can create your own donuts at home

In stressful times such as these, it’s understandable that many of us are turning to pastry. Whether it’s uncovering a previously undiscovered love of baking, or investing in an automatic mini doughnut factory, millions of people are realising that the key to lockdown sanity is regularly treating yourself to something sweet and spongey. 

Of course, the entire planet turning into an army of amateur bakers isn’t good news for everybody. For the many businesses still scrapping to survive, the idea of customers sitting at home, lovingly staring at a freshly made batch of cookies is more alarming than it might initially seem. Some are doing everything they can to fight the trend. Others see things differently. After all, if you can’t beat them, join them. 

Jumping on the baking bandwagon, one of America’s most popular pastry specialists has decided to infiltrate the home. Instead of offering unusual, impossible to reproduce riffs on the classic doughnut formula, Dunkin’ has decided to give the power back to the people, producing DIY doughnut kits for people to use in their own kitchens.

The kits, which have been spotted at several Dunkin’ locations, offer a choice of four or nine doughnuts for $7.99 and $15.99 respectively, accompanied by a variety of toppings, sauces and glazes, allowing you to customise your Dunkin experience according to taste. Added extras include sprinkles, chocolate ganache, and vanilla frosting.

In a blogpost shared with the Dunkin’ community, restaurant franchisee Matt Cobo revealed how one of his employees at a California location originally came to him with the idea. As he explained it: 

“The reality of this experience has set in, and we know it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Like most parents, we were looking for ways to entertain our kids and bring a little levity to this situation.

“This is our small way of trying to brighten someone’s day. The simple joy of getting to create your own donut can make kids light up, and if we can be a part of creating that moment, that makes us happy.”

While we may have to wait some time for normal doughnut service to be resumed, it’s still reassuring to know that we can still get creative with one of the world’s ultimate comfort foods.
