Homemade mini chocolate chip cookie cereal is the internet’s favourite lockdown baking trend

Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

Anyone interested in breakfast knows that cereal can go one of two ways. Either you pour yourself a bowl of something brown, abstemious and incredibly boring, or you throw dietary wisdom out the window in lieu of something infinitely more spectacular. Needless to say, when we have a craving for comfort food, one approach supersedes the other.

Already over the lockdown period, the internet has been inundated with outrageously delicious-looking home cereal solutions. Earlier this month, a new trend for mini pancake cereal took social media by storm, proving that there’s much more to the most important meal of the day than cornflakes. But, despite the popularity of the pancakes, there are now signs that they might not even be the most outrageous option out there. After all, why settle for tiny Aunt Jemima’s when you can have cookies?

The latest in the line of nutritionally questionable, seriously tempting-sounding breakfast treats, homemade chocolate chip cookie cereal is the wakeup call we all need. Popularised by TikTok-er @justinmschuble, the dish differs from the original pancake design in that it includes a generous splash of milk. For many breakfast lovers, this solves a central flaw in the beautiful but not particularly breakfasty pancake idea.

In a post on his popular @dcfoodporn Instagram page, Scuble gave a detailed explanation of how to make the cookie cereal at home. As he put it:

“1. Cut your cookie dough into even pieces. You want to make sure they bake evenly or else some will burn and others will be undercooked. Instead of rolling them into balls, just round the edges. And add an extra chocolate chip on top for a prettier final product.

2. Bake at 350F for about 7 minutes (cookies will still be a little soft). Let them sit on the counter and harden for a few minutes.

3. Add a few spoonfuls of your mini cookies to a bowl and enjoy with milk. To avoid getting all the cookies soggy at once, only add a few bites to your bowl at a time.

4. Try it with ice cream as a dessert!

5. Get creative! You can make any type of cookie into cookie cereal. Doesn’t have to be chocolate chip!!”

Understandably, the recipe has caused quite a stir online. After it appeared, popular preexisting breakfast cereal Cookie Crisp began trending, with many social media users comparing it against the new homemade version.

The @dcfoodporn snap itself has received over 22,000 likes since it was posted on Saturday, with commenters quick to express their excitement. Admittedly, it might not be an everyday sort of recipe, but if you ever feel the need to indulge in the morning, this idea could be perfect.
