KFC is rolling out its viral fried-chicken-and-doughnut sandwich across the country

Whenever a major fast-food player does something mad it’s bound to make headlines. Already this year, fans have been flabbergasted by the arrival of Rick and Morty Krispy Kremes and a Burger King chip butty. Clearly, competition for the most outrageous dish on the market is intense. 

Not wishing to be outdone by their rivals, famed fried chicken purveyor KFC has decided to up the ante. Following the limited but much-hyped release of a fried chicken and doughnut burger in September last year, the business has gone one better, announcing plans to make the controversial sandwich available nationwide for a limited time. Fasten your seatbelts, chicken fans. 

As per Insider, KFC’s chief marketing officer, Andrea Zahumensky, released a press release to accompany the announcement, declaring:

“Chicken & Donuts is the newest fried chicken trend we’re bringing to all of America. It’s a finger lickin’ good dish filled with glaze and glory.”

The dish itself will be available both as a deconstructed doughnut and chicken “basket” or as the original and controversial chicken fillet and glazed ring burger. Either way, the prospects for OTT sweet and savoury dining have never been better.

In addition to the national rollout, KFC has also revealed plans for a pop-up chicken and doughnut shop to commemorate the new release. According to the description of the opening on Eventbrite:

“To make its new Chicken & Donuts a debut to remember, KFC will open a pop-up shop called ‘The Colonel’s (Chicken &) Donuts Shop’ for one day only on Saturday, February 22, in the donut capital of the world – Los Angeles.

“The Colonel’s (Chicken &) Donuts Shop, located at 615 North La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles, will open for one-day only on February 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., serving only Kentucky Fried Chicken & Donuts. As a special treat, the first 50 customers in line* at the shop will receive a free Colonel’s Dozen, a mouthwatering mix of six KFC Extra Crispy™ chicken tenders and six glazed-to-order donuts.”

For anyone unable to make it to LA for an impromptu doughnut spree, the other options will be available in KFC stores until March 16th, or while stocks last, and will set you back between $5.49 and $7.99. We’ll see you in line.
