Krispy Kreme pledges to give health workers free dozens of donuts

If one good thing has come out of the coronavirus crisis, it’s that health workers are rightly being heralded as the heroes they are. Across Europe this week, for instance, citizens have held spontaneous rounds of applauds to show their gratitude for the men and women risking their lives to battle the disease. There is a growing and real sense that the medical community need our support now more than ever. 

This accentuated togetherness is even spreading to the world of business. Dozens of major food brands have pledged their support to medical staff, offering everything from free drinks to discounts to anyone on the front line. Now, it seems that Krispy Kreme has decided to join the movement. 

Starting from this Monday, America’s most famous doughnut merchant has pledged to provide free dozens of doughnuts to health workers every week until May. The initiative will be taking place across the US with hundreds of stores taking part.

According to a press release provided by the company:

“To share joy among the millions in the medical community, and to show our gratitude for all they are doing, beginning Monday, March 30 – National Doctors’ Day – and on every subsequent Monday through National Nurses Week (May 6-12), Krispy Kreme will provide all healthcare workers free dozens of our iconic Original Glazed Doughnuts. Just go to a Krispy Kreme drive-thru, tell us what you need and show us your employer badge. That’s it. Pick up some free dozens on the way to work for you and your colleagues, or maybe a free dozen on your way home to family after a long shift.”

Though the giveaway for medical staff has stolen the headlines, it isn’t the only promotion being offered by the brand. In order to engage the wider community, Krispy Kreme has also announced a “Friends and Neighbors” programme, writing:

“On Saturdays beginning March 28, Krispy Kreme will add a free dozen Original Glazed® Doughnuts to every pick-up, drive-thru and delivery order that includes a full price dozen Original Glazed Doughnuts or more, encouraging customers to put a smile on a neighbor’s face by giving them the free dozen. In fact, each free dozen will include a special smiley-face doughnut; we call it our “Be Sweet Dozen.” The thousands of free dozens on Saturdays will be securely sealed and bagged individually, along with instructions for contactless drop-off, including social distancing and safety guidelines.​”

These are uncertain and scary times for everyone. Given the circumstances, supporting each other with doughnuts seems like as good an idea as any.
