Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re coming up with a new sandwich. When you have a whole food universe stuffed with potential fillings, ranging from classic patties to pulled pork, you can easily create something so monstrous that it stops being tasty and starts to look obscene. Sometimes, less is more.

No dish embodies this attitude more fully than the classic chip butty. Carb-heavy and completely brilliant, this sandwich is all the proof you need that potatoes and bread are the best combo ever. In recognition of this undeniable fact of sandwich construction, legendary fast food business Burger King has decided to introduce its own version to the public.

Like its illustrious forebear, the Burger King Chip Butty is a thing of simple beauty. The only filling is the chain’s signature crunchy French fries, served with a squirt of both ketchup and mayo. Available in New Zealand as part of the Change Range Menu for just $2, it is proof that you don’t need to add a mountain of ingredients or discover a new animal to make something that everyone wants to try.

Also available with added bacon for just $1 extra, the sandwich does differ slightly from the British staple. According to the description on the site:

“With crispy golden fries, mayo and ketchup, nestled between two soft buns, His Royal Fry-ness, the CHIP BUTTY…(is a) dish fit for a King at a price fit for everyone.”

As traditionalists will note, the inclusion of thin crispy fries rather than chunky chips means that the Burger King Chip Butty won’t please everyone, but the fact that it exists at all is cause for celebration.

Understandably, the world’s leading fast-food brands have a habit of focusing on the rich tapestry of American snacking heritage. However, just because American junk can be delicious doesn’t mean that the rest of the world doesn’t have something delicious to offer. As the chip butty proves, there are plenty of other awesome international options available.
