Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

Whether you’re isolating against a deadly disease or stuck in a mizzly service station on the M4, there are few situations that aren’t dramatically improved by a sandwich. While the exact origins of the bread and filling blueprint are up for debate, no one can deny that sandwiches have exponentially improved human existence. We see your iPhone and raise you a BLT.

Along with millions of other lost rituals, many people will be missing their lunchtime trudge to pick up their favourite freshly made baguette, toastie or club. Admittedly, it’s not the most pressing problem with our current predicament, but every inconvenience adds up to a more pervading sense of woe. Fortunately for anyone wanting to get out of their sandwich-less funk, one of the biggest names in the business has decided to step in and spread some bready good news.

Following dozens of other fast-food competitors, popular sandwich specialists Subway have decided to share their famous and much-loved Meatball Marinara sub recipe. Posting to their Facebook page, the brand unveiled a step by step video, revealing everything from the contents of their meatballs to the key to their sauce. For fans craving a hearty footlong, it’s been a godsend.

According to the clip, anyone wanting to recreate the meatballs at home will need:

  • 250 grams of beef and pork mince
  • 40 grams of fresh bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons of finely chopped onion
  • 1 medium egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon of dried Italian herbs
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

To make the sauce, cooks should assemble:

  • 500 ml passata
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 2 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried mixed Italian herbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon caster sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chilli flakes
  •  1 tablespoon flat leaf Parsley, chopped

The meatballs should be brought together by hand in a large mixing bowl and browned in a pan on all sides, before the sauce is made and reduced by a third in the same pan. The meatballs should then be returned to the sauce, which is then cooked covered for a further 6-8 minutes.

To assemble the sub, eight meatballs and sauce should be placed inside a footlong prepared Italian herb and cheese roll, before being topped with cheddar cheese, parmesan and mozzarella and placed inside a 200-degree oven. After a few minutes of gentle toasting, the sandwich is good to go. Aside from getting hold of the actual bread, it really couldn’t be simpler to reproduce.
