You can now get Jaffa Cake-flavoured gin

Like breadmaking and online tutorials in how to effectively stack 103 packs of toilet paper, gin is enjoying a new lease of life in lockdown. Admittedly, it might be because we have nothing better to do on a Saturday night than experiment with the contents of our liquor cabinets, but a win is a win, whatever the circumstances. 

One of the things that really sets gin apart from the rest of the spirit selection is flavouring. In addition to the more traditional botanicals like citrus or juniper, many distillers have thrown total curveballs, infusing their drinks with everything from sprouts to Irn Bru. But, in the middle of all the madness, there’s at least one whacky spirit that sounds as delicious as it is weird.

Made by the aptly named “Jaffa Cake Gin” company and currency retailing at online alcohol emporium “Masters of Malt”, Jaffa Cake Gin is an exciting new spirit that tastes exactly like its spongey namesake. Made with actual Jaffa Cakes, this isn’t a cheap novelty that’s only good for a gag. For chocolate orange lovers, this is the real deal. 

As the description of the gin on the Masters of Malt website states:

“Jaffa Cake Gin is distilled with oranges, fresh orange peel, cocoa powder and Jaffa cakes. Actual Jaffa cakes. As in ‘Right, we could eat these yummy Jaffa cakes, or we could put the Jaffa cakes in this vacuum still and make Jaffa Cake Gin.’ It’s that kind of situation.”

According to the tasting notes provided by the retailers, the resemblance to actual Jaffa Cakes is “uncanny”, and “The flavour never oversteps the mark – this is still resolutely ‘a gin’. Delicately sweet – not sickly or in any way liqueur-like.”

Customers seem to agree. The drink currently has an impressive 4.5 stars out of five, based on 24 reviews, with one happy shopper writing, “I almost didn’t believe the reviews…..but this is absolutely like a jaffa cake. Orange heavy, but real chocolate and even sponge notes in the scent and the taste is a joy.”

A 70cl bottle from Masters of Malt will set you back a total of £27.95, though it is also available through Amazon for £29.77 with free delivery. Given the wildly positive reaction, this looks like the ultimate excuse to upgrade both the drinks’ cabinet and biscuit tin.
