Even though it might ruin the morning of an already frazzled barista, many of us simply can’t cope without our needlessly complicated frothy coffee order. Whether perfectly whipped milk is entirely essential for a commute is up for debate. One thing that’s certain, however, is that whatever you’re drinking is exponentially improved by something sweet, silky soft and frivolous.
Understandably given current circumstances, many of us are missing this particular coffee house perk. But, as is proving to be the case across the food industry, it’s very difficult to totally shackle the human spirit, however testing the circumstances. Where there’s a will for creamy whip, there’s a way.
Showing the way forward for the rest of us foamy woebegones, enterprising home cooks across the internet have taken the opportunity to come up with their own hacks for whipping chocolate, strawberry and Nutella milk into the perfect creamy coffee topper. Needless to say, the results speak for themselves.
The recipes, of which there are dozens dotted across various social media platforms, originally became popular as a result of the social distancing measures introduced by South Korea, and were dubbed “Dalgona” coffee after an actor likened the taste to the popular Korean biscuit of the same name.

The formula for making your own is incredibly simple, usually requiring no more than three ingredients. For a “traditional” coffee blend, simply whip equal proportions of instant coffee powder, sugar, and hot water until it becomes creamy and then add to a base of cold or hot milk.
What seems to make the technique so appealing is that it can be applied to many different ingredients. For instance, one Instagram recipe describes:
“Another alternative to #whippedcoffee… I bring to you Whipped Strawberry Milk made using one of my favorite childhood drinks ever, Nesquik! All you need is 1 tbsp of Strawberry Nesquik and 4 tbsp (1/4 cup) of heavy whipping cream. Mix it until your arm is numb and serve over cold or hot milk”
Another reveals a coffee-free whipped cocoa recipe that looks like a perfect chocolatey cooler. Coffee shops may be off-limits, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get creative.
