Even though the endless reruns and highly publicised reactions to its reappearance on Netflix might have given the impression that “Friends” is still as zeitgeisty as ever, this year actually marks a quarter of a century since Ross, Rachel et al first graced our screens. If you hear one fact this year that’s going to make you feel super old, this is probably it.
It might not be the cultural force it once was, but “Friends” is still massive. In 2018, British survey specialists OfCom found that the show was the most popular programme across all streaming services, putting it ahead of the likes of Stranger Things, The Crown and Peaky Blinders. Not bad for a 20 year old sitcom with a questionable attitude to homosexuality. Small wonder, then, that the show’s iconic coffee house is getting a special shout out to celebrate the 25th anniversary.
Launched in conjunction with Warner Bros, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf have announced a new range of coffee blends, all inspired by the legendary “Central Perk” coffee shop from the show. Starting July 31st, customers will be able to get their hands on 12-ounce bags of medium or dark roast coffee, as 20 black tea bags, all retailing for $9.95. The company are clearly planning on being there for coffee addicts this summer.
In addition to the bags for home brewing, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf are also planning to launch their own range of six beverages. According to Insider, the new collection includes “The Joey (mango cold-brew tea), The Monica (Midnight Mocha cold brew), The Rachel (matcha latte), The Ross (classic flat white), The Chandler (caramel coconut latte) and The Phoebe (cookies and cream ice blended),” and will be on sale from August 4th.
As if the Friends-mania couldn’t get any more pronounced, the business have also launched their own Central Perk emblazoned giant coffee cup, although these are currently listed as sold out on The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf website. Even if Friends isn’t quite your cup of tea, it’s certainly an interesting time to be a coffee enthusiast.
