It might be incredibly expensive and sophisticated, but to many people, a glass of scotch tastes like swilling battery acid. While plenty of connoisseurs are undoubtedly intoxicated by the prospect of having the back of their throat severely burned, it’s tough to argue that almost any whisky is as moreish as a frosty bottle of beer. That, however, may well be about to change.
Thanks to daring husband and wife duo Steven Yeng and Brittany Merrill Yeng, anyone intimidated by the traditional taste of whisky can get their hands on what might be the most delicious twist on the drink ever created. After spending years serving customers shots made from a secret, homebrewed liquor recipe, the couple have decided to bottle the booze and sell it is the world’s first peanut butter-flavoured whisky. The result has been an unprecedented success.
Known as “Screwball”, the new drink has long been making waves in the Yengs’ local San Diego neighbourhood, and is a firm favourite of customers to their businesses, OB Noodle House and Bar 1502. However, the booze has been making headlines around the world over the last few months after it was awarded a double gold medal at 2018’s New York World Wine and Spirits Competition. Since then, sales have gone through the roof.
It’s not just the judges at international whisky-tasting competitions who have had a lot to say about the new drink. The Daily Meal described Screwball as “especially great for non-whiskey drinkers because the boldness that typically comes with the spirit is slightly muted by the richness of the peanut butter,” adding that, “It’s comparable to Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey in the sense that it’s smooth, flavorful and moderately sweet.” According to an aggregate score on the website “Quality Liquor Store” the drink has an average rating of 4.9 out of five, based on 50 reviews – certainly not something to be sniffed at.
Although almost everyone agrees that the drink is delicious both neat and as a mixer, the Yengs also included their preferred signature recipe as part of the press release to The Daily Meal. Their “Peanut Butter and Jealous” cocktail mixes 1.25 ounces Skrewball Whiskey, 3/4 ounces raspberry liqueur and 1/2 ounce semi-skimmed milk to create a cocktail that tastes just like everyone’s favourite sandwich.
Skrewball is currently available at retailers across Arizona and California, but can also be shipped from a number of online retailers. Selling for around $25 per bottle, and with a slew of positive reviews behind it, this might be one novelty drink that’s well worth buying. At the very least, it will give you an easy way to look a little more sophisticated – even if you’re really just drinking a glorified peanut butter milkshake.
