Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

Vice-President Kamala Harris is causing a storm among Republican critics thanks to her taste in pastry.

The Democratic Number Two took to the skies this week on a diplomatic mission to Guatemala. As part of the visit, Harris decided to gift attending journalists with cookies baked in her likeness.

As you might expect, given the current state of American political discourse, the reaction has been anything but level-headed.

Kamala Harris cookies cause a stir

The storm started after White House reporter Courtney Subramanain shared a photo of one of the cookies. The snack, which resembles Harris’ silhouette with all of the facial features missing, is certainly striking.

Subramanain accompanied her cookie photo with a caption, writing: “Made an OTR visit to the back of the plane and delivered cookies decorated with the shape of her likeness as well as AF2.”

No sooner had she shared the image, however, when the right-wing machine went into meltdown.

GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, for instance, tweeted: “Handing out cookies with her face on them as the border crisis rages. The modern-day equivalent of ‘let them eat cake’.”

Canadian Youtuber Lauren Chen added: “I thought someone gave Kamala cookies that look like her. That would’ve been a cute gift. Instead, she gave cookies that look like her to other people. That’s a narcissistic AF and a totally weird gift.”

Other equally considered and rational responses soon came flooding in. Let this be a lesson to any politician considering patronising a bakery.

The story behind the cookies

While the furore and faux-outrage over the current administration’s taste in biscuits show no signs of abating, there are suggestions that this entire situation is just a massive misunderstanding.

According to The Daily Mail, Mediate reporter Tommy Christopher confirmed that Harris hadn’t commissioned the treats herself, shockingly. Instead, they were a gift from Washington, DC, bakery CakeWichCraft.

This prompted some observes to publically wonder what all the fuss is about. As one Twitterer put it: “Kamala was given cookies that look like her by a Black-owned business. Kamala then handed them out to the press.

“The press is now saying that was a gross thing to do. Tell me, was she just supposed to eat them all herself?”

It seems that the whole situation is basically a storm in a teacup. Let’s just hope no one finds another biscuit to dunk in.
