Twisted: Unserious food tastes seriously good.

Carly Rae Jepsen is used to taking her tastebuds on tour. After all, you don’t reach number one in 18 countries without racking up some serious air miles.

However, just because someone’s used to travelling, it doesn’t mean that they don’t crave home comforts.

As part of our exclusive “Hangin’ With” series, we decided to treat the Canadian “Call Me Maybe” singer to a taste of home. Combining a classic full English with her home country’s signature comfort food, we set about creating Rae Jepsen’s ultimate hangover dish – a giant breakfast poutine.

Needless to say, the results were pretty spectacular.

Carly Rae Jepsen’s dream breakfast

From early on during our conversation with the 34-year-old songstress, it’s abundantly clear that she likes food. This could be why she decided to base herself in Los Angeles, California’s capital of cuisine. As she explains:

“LA is a place where all of your dreams can come true in terms of food. If you’re a health nut, you have every option available on the planet, and if you are into that junk food, it’s down the street.”

Being interested in eating has also helped Rae Jepsen’s previous trips to the UK become infinitely more enjoyable. Discussing the legendary British breakfast, she reveals:

“The UK, of course, is famous for the English breakfast, where you’ve got the black pudding, and the beans, and the sausages.

“So, I tried it for the first time the last time that I was here at the hotel. I’ve got to say, I’m a fan. I might even transition from my American breakfast to a bit more sausage and beans.”

As the discussion continues, it’s clear that breakfast has always been a big deal for Carly Rae Jepsen, wherever she was living. Discussing her upbringing, she reveals:

“Growing up at home, my dad at Christmas would do this really indulgent ‘Breakfast of Champions’. It was bacon, it was eggs, it was everything!

“It was actually my favourite part of waking up. Santa could just move over there,” she continues, gesturing off into the distance.

“I think that was the first sort of spark that I knew I was onto something. Then when I moved out it was just greasy breakfast every day I could get my hands on it,” she adds gleefully.

This love of breakfasts is what inspired us to cook Carly a twist on the traditional full English formula.

For our epic breakfast poutine, we combined rich gravy, cheese curds, bacon, sausages and fried eggs, all loaded onto a giant platter of French fries. The end result is just as delicious as it sounds.

Cooking with Carly Rae Jepsen

Although she makes no claims to be a professional, Carly Rae Jepsen does fancy herself as a bit of a breakfast specialist. As she puts it:

“I’m not an incredible cook, but the one thing that I can take over is the morning meal. So when I have guests over, I go for everything, and my piece de resistance is I can do eggs very well.”

In fact, Rae Jepsen is so confident in her skills with the egg pan that she’s prepared to use it in the company of A-listers.

After discussing her egg abilities, the singe came up with a proposition for English heart-throb Colin Firth, declaring:

“Colin Firth; I would like to share breakfast with you. Won’t you let me make you some eggs?”

Maybe breakfast isn’t the only exciting thing about being in Britain.
