McDonald’s scraps 80% of its veggie menu and people aren't happy

McDonald’s has quietly announced it’s ditching the majority of its vegetarian options, and there's been some backlash. From the start of next week, almost every veggie-friendly item will vanish from menus - leaving just one plant-based option left standing.
It’s reported the chain is removing around 80 percent of its vegetarian and vegan dishes. That means favourites like Veggie Dippers, Veggie Dipper Happy Meals, Spicy Veggie Wraps and the Vegetable Deluxe sandwich are all set to be taken off menu boards.
The one thing still sticking around? The McPlant - a vegan burger with a plant-based patty co-developed with Beyond Meat that’s been around in UK and Ireland restaurants for a few years now.
So why the shake-up?
McDonald’s says the decision comes down to customer feedback. A spokesperson claimed that while the McPlant is a “firm fan favourite,” the other meat-free items simply weren’t selling as well as hoped — so they’ll be pulled to “focus on developing better vegetarian options.”
That explanation hasn’t gone down well online.
Reacting to the news on Reddit, one person described the move as “absolutely criminal,” while another said:
“It’s 2026 and I’ve been saying McDonald’s needs to make their vegetarian range bigger and cheaper, so they kill off everything I actually get.”
Others said the decision had completely put them off eating there altogether.
“The veggie wrap was my go-to order on the rare event I had a Maccies. Guess now I’m just not eating there again,” one user wrote.
What’s next?
McDonald’s insists it’s learning from other markets and looking at what does work for veggie and vegan customers, teasing that new and improved meat-free options could be on the way in future.
But for now, if you’re popping in for a veggie McDonald’s dinner? Your choices are about to get a whole lot smaller.
