KFC brings back iconic Double Down burger in the US

‘What could be better than a crispy fried chicken burger?’, we hear you ask.

How about a burger where the fried chicken is the bun?! Anyone remember the KFC Double Down?

Yup, ICYMI, the Double Down is a burger where two KFC crispy chicken fillets make up the burger bun, and then cheese, bacon and peppery mayo or a spicy sauce are sandwiched lovingly inside.

And guess what? It’s officially returning to stores across the US on March 6th for a four week period (god, we wish we were Stateside, right now).

The Double Down hasn’t been on American menus for almost a decade, arriving in 2010 on April the 1st, which left many people thinking it was an April Fools prank.

But it turns out it wasn’t. Instead, it was just a delightfully whacky idea, and when the limited edition fried chicken burger dropped in stores it was an instant hit.

The burger returned in 2014 after much demanding from fans, but, again, it was only for a short stint.

Now, nine whole years later, it’s back again – and it only took a little (read a lot of) nagging from fans.

The Double Down certainly wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea when it previously dropped (yep, there are some people who wouldn’t devour this fried chicken dream, believe it or not…)

But for all the naysayers, there were also cult followers who couldn’t think of anything better. To give you an idea, a petition called ‘Bring Back The KFC Double Down! even launched on Change.org five years ago, amassing hundreds of signatures.

“The Double Down is one of the most buzzworthy fast food menu items ever,” said Nick Chavez, KFC U.S. chief marketing officer, in a press release.

“After nearly a decade of people begging for its return, we’re embracing the chaos, bringing back our most iconic sandwich ever for just four weeks.”

Unfortunately for any Brits reading this, there are no plans to bring the Double Down to our menus at present, though it did make a brief appearance over here in 2020.

KFC bosses, if you’re listening, we want in, too! Fried chicken instead burger buns will always be a winner in our eyes…
