It's the luck of the Irish! McDonald's has just announced the return of the Shamrock Shake, in time for St Patrick's Day.

Yep, the green milkshake is gonna be back in Maccies stores over in the US from today (5th February), and it's sure to cause some excitement.

Made with “creamy vanilla soft serve blended with minty Shamrock Shake syrup and topped with a whipped light cream,” the drink is a seasonal favourite every year.

Whilst Maccies hasn’t said how long the drink will be around, we’d hazard a guess that it won’t last long after the Paddy's Day celebrations, so we’d advise getting your fill now if you live Stateside and you’re a fan.

The Shamrock Shake was such a hit that it was followed by an Oreo Shamrock McFlurry 2020, which will also be back on menus.

"Make your friends green with envy and snag one of these famously minty treats while supplies last," said McDonald's in an announcement about the news.

Both seasonal items will be available in participating McDonald's restaurants nationwide.

The shake was invented in 1967 by Connecticut McDonald’s owner, Hal Rosen, and was such a favourite that it ended up rolling out across the States, in what Maccies branded an “instant success”.

Believe it or not, 2012 was the first time the drink got a full, nationwide rollout, despite already having been around for more than 50 years.

It is now beloved by pretty much every McDonald’s fan in America, with the fast food giant even describing it as a “cult favourite.”

Last year, the Shamrock Shake dropped on menus on 20th February, so the fact they're introducing it earlier this year is a real winner, and no doubt in response to the high demand.

Unfortunately, the Shamrock McDonald’s products haven’t made it over to the UK yet, despite being hugely popular in America. This is because different Maccies markets vary the products on their menus – in fact, you can find something unique in pretty much every McDonald’s around the world.

Here’s hoping McDonald’s bosses decide to bring it over here, soon!
